Role Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Estimator with a strong background in heavy civil construction to lead the preparation of accurate, competitive, and strategic project estimates. This role requires managing the full estimating lifecycle, including bid development, pricing analysis, and contract negotiations. The Senior Estimator will collaborate with a team of estimators, administrators, and leadership to ensure precise cost projections and value-driven proposals. With an annual workload of 25-50 estimates ranging from $5M to $100M, this position is vital to securing and executing large-scale infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee bid development, including scope definition, pricing strategy, bid closeout, and scheduling.
- Analyze historical project data, labor rates, equipment costs, and subcontractor/vendor pricing to generate detailed unit pricing and cost estimates.
- Develop conceptual budgets and final cost assessments for a range of project types.
- Provide technical guidance to team members involved in bid preparation.
- Interpret specifications and drawings, attend pre-bid meetings, and determine key bid components.
- Facilitate meetings with clients and construction managers to refine scope and value engineering opportunities.
- Lead formal bid presentations, CPM scheduling discussions, and contract negotiations.
- Maintain estimating software databases, including labor, crew, activity, and master codebooks.
- Oversee the transition of awarded bids into project budgeting and cost control structures.
- Ensure proper documentation and backup data for all estimates.
- Track contract awards and provide pricing for additional work, change orders, and credits as needed.
- Assist procurement teams with bid inquiries and subcontractor evaluations.
- Mentor and develop junior estimators to strengthen departmental expertise.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in civil or mechanical engineering, or a combination of technical training and relevant experience.
- 10+ years of estimating, cost control, or engineering experience, with at least 5 years specializing in heavy civil construction. Water and wastewater expertise is a plus.
- Proven ability to estimate various project types, including unit price, lump sum, DOT, and design-build contracts.
- Experience leading estimating teams and coordinating complex bid strategies.
- Strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple bids simultaneously and meet critical deadlines.
