Senior Design Manager - Transmission & Distribution

Glasgow, UK | Hybrid Working

2-3 days per week in the office | 1-2 site visits per fortnight

A leading international engineering consultancy is seeking a Senior Design Manager to play a key role in the continued growth of its Glasgow Transmission & Distribution team.

This is a high-impact position offering the opportunity to grow alongside the Glasgow section of the business, with direct influence over project delivery, team development, and client relationships. You will report directly into the Divisional Manager and take responsibility for managing a small design team, including an Assistant Designer.


The Role

You will lead the delivery of complex UK power transmission and distribution design projects, acting as Project Manager and/or Design Manager depending on project scope.

Key responsibilities include:

  • End-to-end leadership of engineering design projects from concept through to completion

  • Delivery of design-only and EPC / Design & Build projects

  • Acting as Principal Designer representative under CDM Regulations 2015

  • Accountability for project performance across safety, quality, programme, cost, and risk

  • Contract management, commercial control, and stakeholder coordination

  • Leading and mentoring a small design team, supporting development and capability growth

  • Close collaboration with senior leadership to support business growth in Scotland

  • Supporting bids, proposals, and client engagement activities

  • Championing Safety by Design and technical excellence


About You

  • Degree-qualified in a relevant engineering discipline

  • Strong background in UK electricity transmission & distribution design

  • Proven experience in a design management or project management role

  • Experience working on National Grid Electricity Transmission projects

  • Good knowledge of CDM Regulations, UK H&S and environmental legislation

  • Familiar with NEC contracts

  • Confident managing people and working directly with senior stakeholders

  • Proactive, commercially aware, and keen to grow with a developing regional team

  • Relevant Health & Safety qualification (NEBOSH, IOSH or equivalent)

Principal Designer

Act as Principal Designer in accordance with CDM regulations, ensuring legal compliance across all relevant projects.Plan, manage, monitor and coordinate health and safety in the pre-construction phase.Identify, eliminate, or control foreseeable risks through effective design risk management.Chair Hazid reviews and ensure appropriate actions are taken to manage and mitigate all risk identifiedCoordinate with the Principal Contractor representative (internal) to review methods of work and ensure wider CDM compliance through the construction phase.Ensure designers comply with their duties and co-operate with the project team.Advise clients on their CDM duties and responsibilities.Coordinate and communicate with contractors, engineers, and other stakeholders to embed health and safety throughout design and delivery.Maintain robust records and documentation to demonstrate compliance.Develop and maintain internal procedures, tools, and templates for CDM and safety compliance.Provide training and guidance to design teams on safety-in-design best practice.Act as a billable resource, ensuring services are charged appropriately to clients.Contribute to continuous improvement in safety culture, compliance standards, and efficiency.
