Building a Future for Peruvian Children

ERSG are proud to support the work for Building a Future for Peruvian Children for another year in 2018 and going forward in 2019.

Between 2009 and 2018, Building a Future for Peruvian Children have enabled 1,303 children (aged between 6-17 years of age) living in extreme poverty access to education and provided the materials necessary to learn.

Carole Watton, Treasurer of the charity visited Peru in November '18 meeting some of the children that the charity already supports and visiting new schools. The teachers work tirelessly to persuade parents to send their children to school but especially in the more rural communities it proves difficult to persuade parents to invest in their children.

Carole sent the following update from two of the children the charity supports:

Damaris and Heidi are cousins who, in all weathers, walk together every day for one and a half hours from their community of Pacobamba, in the hills above, to study at the secondary school of Lajas. Both are from very poor families where resources are barely sufficient for their food.

Damaris' parents have been forced to leave their child in the care of her grandparents whilst they support her with money sent from their work far from home.
Heidi knows nothing of her father and lives with her mother, brother and grandfather in a home supported only by what her mother can earn by working in the countryside from early in the morning until late at night.

They talk of being sad sometimes at the poverty of their lives; and the joy they feel when each year they receive a complete packet of school materials, which gives them hope that they can fulfil their dream of taking themselves, and their families, out of poverty.
