Project Engineer - Design (PE-Ds)
The PE-D shall undertake the role set out in in NR/L2/RSE/02009 issue 7. The PE-D shall be nominated to the programme, and each PE-D will be allocated responsibility for specific deliverables or packages of design work.
PE-D responsibilities are (but not limited) to:

  • Agree the design deliverables to be produced at each Plan of Works Stages by the CRE-D.
  • Review the programme requirements from the CRE-D.
  • Raise and manage the approval of any deviations from standards or non-compliances to requirements.
  • Undertake technical acceptance of design deliverables as defined within the discipline specific Network Rail standards.
  • Complete DRNs for discipline based technical acceptance for DPE approval.
  • Answer TQs/RFIs from the design team and to coordinate a response to TQs/RFIs raised by the construction team to the design team.
  • Support the DPE in resolving technical issues and challenges through production of project advice notices, engineering notices and technical papers.
  • Carry out assurance activities as directed by the DPE.
  • Ensure the programme systems such as ProjectWise and ComplyPro are being used correctly and are being kept up to date.
  • Attend and contribute to Design Reviews and IDC/IDRs
  • Collate design assurance evidence as applicable to discipline standards, using the programme processes.
  • Support the PPM and the DPE in the collation of Works Information Packs through interfacing with the CRE-D and CRE-C.
  • Review and incorporate CSM hazard mitigations and Safety Requirements (from ComplyPro) into design.
  • Clarify and incorporate Interoperable (NTSN) design requirements into designs.
  • Support the CRE-D with NTSN compliance statement and evidence development.
  • Support the Requirements team in ensuring the requirements management plan is met.
  • Clarify and incorporate CDM hazard mitigation/control requirement (from ComplyPro) into designs, ensuring that the design team keep the Hazard Log up to date at all times.
  • Track and resolve parallel design interfaces and risks.
  • Support the CRE-D with uploading design evidence into ProjectWise and ComplyPro and link it to the relevant requirements via the V&V module.

    • Knowledgeable and experienced in working on large railway multidisciplinary Projects
    • Familiar with NR and RSSB Standards and NR Processes for Projects
    • Appreciation of Railway Systems disciplines and their interfaces
    • Appreciation of Railway Operations and their interfaces
    • Understand relationship between Civils Assets and track with respect to gauging and clearances and PTI interfaces
    • Understand the requirements for Level Boarding and PRM requirements
    • Coordinate and integrate track and Platform Designs
    • Experience in different types of platform construction
    • Experience in Design Optimisation
    • Appreciation of Structural Assessments
    • Appreciation of railway drainage
    • Knowledge of waterproofing of Structures
    • Knowledge of Standard Designs
    • Knowledge of VE and VM to achieve Design efficiencies
    • Knowledge of NTSNs, CSM and Requirements.
    • Experience in Design and Construction phases of a Project.
  • PE Civils Requirements - Management
    • Support the Project to meet its Objectives
    • Support PM and Engineering Team including CEM and DPE as required in the Assurance Areas for CVL
    • Liaise and provide guidance where necessary to Supply Chain, Designers and IDP to enable Project Objectives, Aims and Programme to be met
    • Liaise with Infrastructure Management
    • Work collaboratively across the Project
