ERSG is recruiting for a Civil and Structural Engineer to help develop a South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT) upgrade in Brooklyn, NY. This position is with a large offshore wind developer with multiple projects confirmed off the east coast. This candidate will play an important role in shaping and accelerating the energy transition towards offshore wind. The Civil and Structural Engineer will report into the Civil and Structural Lead.

  • This is initially a contract positions (expected 2 years) with potential contract extension(s).
  • We are looking for individuals commutable or open to relocating to Brooklyn, New York (unfortunately no relocation is provided).
  • This position is open to individuals who have the right to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Project Overview:

South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT) is an industrial area in the Sunset Park district in Brooklyn, New York City. The site occupies around 77 acres that historically was used as a bulk cargo and container terminal. The terminal's Master Plan is to convert the area to a multi-purpose facility to serve the growing Offshore Wind Industry. Our client is currently developing a portfolio of offshore wind projects which will utilize the upgraded SBMT facilities for project execution and operation phases.

  • The SBMT Port Upgrade project comprises of:
  • Modifications and upgrades of the terminal site to transform the area to become an offshore wind staging port for wind turbine components.
  • New facilities to be engineered, permitted, and constructed.
  • Operational and Maintenance (O&M) complex with offices, berthing and warehouse to serve the portfolio of offshore wind farms.
  • Onshore Substation (ONS)
  • The engineering and permitting activities are ongoing and will continue with contract preparations and construction activities over the next 2 years.

Position Summary

The Civil and Structural Engineer will be part of the Developer's integrated Project Team. The Project Team is responsible for all tasks related to engineering, permitting, planning, procurement, construction, and completion of the Port Upgrade scope. The Civil and Structural Engineer will be responsible for the management and follow up of contractors tasked to execute the project. The position will continue through the engineering, pre-construction, and construction phases. During the Construction phase, reporting may shift towards the Construction Manager.

Main Responsibilities

  • Civil and Structural specialist / discipline engineer for the SBMT Port Upgrade
  • Reports to Civil and Structural Lead on all matters (scope, design, quality, progress)
  • Liaise and coordinate the company's position with the Construction Team and End-User Representatives on civil and structural, and multi-discipline matters.
  • Contribute to planning, cost estimation and execution of civil and structural design and construction scope.
  • Provide input into procurement process (e.g., invitation to tender, bid evaluation, award recommendation)
  • Actively follow up and mitigate engineering and construction risks.
  • Represent the company's position in technical matters, in relation to the main contractors, and their subcontractors:
  • Jacobs - as design contractor
  • Skanska - as construction manager contractor and its sub-contractors.
  • Construction phase (ongoing)
  • Follow up Construction Contractors within compliance to design.
  • Follow up Construction Sub-Contractors on site to ensure deliverables meet scope of work, quality, HSE, cost, and schedule.
  • Support construction field engineers and advise management on decisions within own discipline, e.g., inter-disciplinary input, RFIs, submittals, etc.
  • Plan and execute follow-up activities e.g., verifications and site inspection.

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in engineering and construction projects.
  • Strong knowledge of Steel and Reinforced Concrete Design (LRFD, ASD).
  • Strong knowledge of reviewing detailed Structural/Civil Shop Drawings.
  • Familiar with deep foundations design and execution, preferred proficiency.
  • Familiar with pavement design, water, and sewer utilities concept.
  • General experience with construction, commissioning, and start-up of projects.
  • Hands-on experience in leading and executing onshore civil and structural project delivery, marine structures, and port facilities (greenfield and brownfield).
  • Familiar with industry standard software, Procore, Navisworks, BIM Revit preferred.
  • Plan and execute follow-up activities e.g., verifications and site inspection.
  • Familiar with relevant US regulations and industry standards and design codes, with an emphasis on NYC BC, ASCEE, ACI.
  • Familiar with working with risk management systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's, or master's degree
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, preferred, but not mandatory.
