The primary purpose of this role is to lead and deliver control and protection engineering designs for electrical substation projects up to 400kV.

The position also encompasses wider responsibilities in planning, procurement support, and project delivery to ensure successful engineering execution across substation programmes.

  • Ensure all duties are performed in line with company Quality, Health & Safety, Environmental policies, and business processes.

  • Support skills development and training initiatives within the design team according to experience and capability.

  • On contract award, coordinate requirements with the Project Manager, client, external suppliers, and internal teams.

  • Define design scope, resources, and timelines; develop detailed engineering plans aligned with project schedules.

  • Monitor progress, report against targets, forecast resource requirements, and escalate concerns where necessary.

  • Collaborate with internal departments to specify and quantify equipment and material needs to optimise value.

  • Identify and communicate scope changes; proceed only following agreed approvals.

  • Issue instructions for materials and specialist tools required on site.

  • Specify technical documentation requirements including test certificates and O&M manuals.

  • Interpret contract documents, identify scope boundaries, and ensure compliance with relevant national and international standards, legislation, and client requirements.

  • Produce design risk assessments and ensure CDM compliance.

  • Review contract scope vs tender scope and highlight deviations.

  • Participate in design reviews and project close-out meetings, ensuring actions are completed.

  • Coordinate with engineers, designers, and draughtspersons to produce required drawings.

  • Check and approve engineering designs produced by the design team.

  • Initiate and approve drawings for client or subcontractor submission.

  • Prepare installation and commissioning packages aligned with site schedules.

  • Develop specialist test specifications and procedures.

  • Review "as-installed" documentation and support compilation of final records for client handover.

  • Identify design issues, propose solutions, and work with management to resolve.

  • Undertake engineering checks in accordance with business process requirements.

Education

  • HNC in Electrical Engineering or higher (or equivalent).

Experience

  • Experience collaborating with clients and suppliers.

  • UK industry experience; experience working with National Grid standards advantageous.

  • Background in electrical power system design and specification.

  • Proven ability to complete engineering calculations to validate design integrity.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

Primary Design Engineer - HV SubstationsOverview:Lead the design delivery for high-voltage (up to 400kV) substation projects, ensuring alignment with National Grid requirements and industry standards.
