This month, we caught up with Bonga Mthethwa, one of our talented contractors, to find out what it’s really like to work as a Wind Turbine Technician, climbing towering turbines and seeing clean energy projects come to life.
What does a Wind Turbine Technician do?
As a Wind Turbine Technician, Bonga is responsible for assembling, installing, and maintaining wind turbines on-site. His role covers everything from setting up the base and tower sections to mounting the nacelle, hub, and blades, working closely with crane operators and a team of specialists to ensure each turbine is installed safely and in line with strict engineering standards.
The Highlight of the Job
For Bonga, the best part of the job is seeing the full transformation from groundwork to generation. “One of the most rewarding moments is watching a turbine go from just a foundation in the ground, or a jacket or monopile offshore, to a fully operational structure producing clean energy,” he says.
“There’s a real sense of accomplishment in building something on such a massive scale, especially knowing it’s helping to power communities sustainably.”
How to Get Started
Bonga’s journey into renewables began with a technical training programme focused on wind turbine technology and construction safety.
“From there, I joined a crew as an apprentice and learned a lot on the job,” he recalls. “Over time, I developed the skills and certifications needed to work on full turbine installations, service, and maintenance across various onshore sites, until I joined the offshore installation crew.”
His story is a perfect example of how dedication, continuous learning, and hands-on experience can build a successful career in the fast-growing renewable energy sector.
