As technology continues to advance, new skills are becoming increasingly essential to drive the renewable energy industry forward. We asked our ERSG community which skill sets they believe are most in demand in shaping the future of renewables. The results are in, and weve compiled everything you need to know about the roles leading the way.

 

Engineering 

One of the top skills indicated by our community is Engineering. According to The Wind Industry Skills Intelligence Report 2025, engineering is at the heart of the renewable energy transition, providing the expertise needed to build the technologies powering a sustainable future.
From developing offshore wind farms and solar infrastructure to advancing battery storage and grid integration, engineers are driving innovation at every stage of the energy lifecycle. As the industry evolves, their problem-solving skills, technical knowledge, and ability to adapt to new technologies make engineering one of the most critical skill sets shaping the renewable energy landscape.
 

Project Management

Similarly, Project Management is playing a pivotal role in the renewable energy sector, especially as emerging technologies transform how projects are delivered. The UK Government’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan / Skills Report describes strong demand for managerial roles including project managers, construction project managers across clean energy sectors. Their duties typically include: Coordinating the installation of offshore wind farms to integrating advanced storage systems and digital solutions.
Project managers ensure complex initiatives stay on track, on budget, and aligned with evolving industry standards. Their ability to bridge technical expertise with strategic oversight makes them indispensable in bringing cutting-edge renewable projects to life. 
 

Digital and Data 

Digital and data analytics are redefining the renewable energy sector, providing the insights needed to boost efficiency, cut costs, and drive innovation. For example, The Wind Industry Skills Intellegence Report 2025 notes the growing importance of “digital specialisms” in the future of offshore wind. Whether it’s using predictive models to maintain turbines, analysing solar performance in real time, or enabling smarter grid management, data is at the core of progress. 
Specialists in digital technologies and analytics are helping to build energy systems that are not only more efficient but also smarter, scalable, and sustainable for the future.
 

Skilled Labour

General labour plays a vital role in bringing renewable energy projects to life, providing the hands-on support needed to turn plans into reality. According to reports from industry professionals, thousands of jobs in regions will be needed, indicating labour demand across multiple disciplines. From assembling and installing infrastructure to maintaining sites and ensuring safe operations, these roles form the backbone of the industry.
As demand for renewable energy grows, skilled labourers are essential in keeping projects on schedule and supporting the successful delivery of a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
