Senior / Principal Highways Civil Engineer Initial 6-month contractOutside IR35Mainly remote working About the RoleWe are seeking a number of skilled and motivated Highways Civil Engineers to join our clients infrastructure team. The successful candidate will play a key role in the planning, design, and delivery of major highways projects, with a particular emphasis on schemes for National Highways.Key ResponsibilitiesUndertake detailed design of highways and associated infrastructure in accordance with DMRB and MCHW specifications.Manage and contribute to the development of feasibility studies, detailed design packages, and technical reports for National Highways schemes.Support project delivery through all RIBA stages, from concept to construction.Prepare drawings, specifications, and contract documents using CAD (AutoCAD/Civil 3D) and other industry-standard software.Lead or support liaison with National Highways, local authorities, statutory bodies, and other key stakeholders.Ensure project documentation complies with CDM 2015 and other relevant UK legislation.Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.Monitor project budgets, programme schedules, and quality performance.Essential RequirementsBEng or MEng in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (CEng/IEng), or working towards this with a relevant professional institution (ICE or CIHT).Minimum 6 years' experience in the design and delivery of highways projects, with direct experience working on National Highways projects.Strong knowledge of DMRB, MCHW, CDM Regulations, and National Highways standards and procedures.Proficiency in design tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MX Road, and drainage design packages (e.g., MicroDrainage).Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Desirable SkillsExperience with ECI (Early Contractor Involvement) and Design and Build contracts.Understanding of Road Safety Audits and Traffic Modelling inputs.BIM Level 2 compliance experience.Familiarity with project management tools and reporting.ersg are an equal opportunities employer; we are committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all job applicants. Primary Design Engineer - HV SubstationsOverview:Lead the design delivery for high-voltage (up to 400kV) substation projects, ensuring alignment with National Grid requirements and industry standards. Support Design Delivery Managers with team oversight and contribute to project planning and procurement.Key Responsibilities:Lead and coordinate HV primary substation design, ensuring compliance with specifications and applicable standards.Check and approve key design deliverables: single line diagrams, layouts, SC force and earthing calculations, access provisions, etc.Act as Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE) per National Grid procedures.Represent the Principal Designer role under CDM 2015, where required.Review technical specs and supplier proposals.Support planning, work allocation, and resource coordination within the design team.Contribute to design risk assessments and ensure safety and sustainability by design.Prepare and review design management plans (DEMP) and ensure compliance with internal engineering expectations (e.g., GMEE).Qualifications & Experience:Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent); Chartered Engineer or working towards chartership.Member of a relevant professional body (e.g., MIET).10+ years' experience in HV substation design.Strong understanding of AIS/GIS up to 400kV and HV plant equipment.Familiarity with National Grid standards and TP141 qualification (advantageous).Competence in engineering tools (e.g., AutoCAD, MS Office) and design validation through calculations.BIM 360 experience desirable.ersg are an equal opportunities employer; we are committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all job applicants.
