In recent years, we have seen the offshore wind sector undergo rapid expansion, becoming a major source of jobs, innovation, and economic growth worldwide. As countries work to meet net zero targets, offshore wind is emerging as a viable driver of employment, both locally and internationally.

Economic Growth for Offshore Wind

In the UK, the offshore wind industry currently provides around 32,000 jobs. A new Industrial Growth Plan aims to triple manufacturing capacity over the next ten years, helping to establish the UK as a global leader in offshore wind and unlocking major economic benefits.

If the UK increases offshore wind development to 5 to 6 gigawatts per year, in line with climate targets, it could create 10,000 new jobs each year and add £25 billion to the economy by 2035. By 2030, more than 100,000 people are expected to be working in the sector. By 2040, investment in offshore wind could generate up to £92 billion for the UK economy. The growth of this sector supports energy goals while creating long-term jobs and infrastructure.

Technological Innovation

Technological innovation is also playing a significant role in driving job creation. Floating offshore wind, in particular, is providing new areas for development in deeper waters, expanding the potential for clean energy generation. Research from The Crown Estate indicates that floating wind projects could create over 5,000 jobs and contribute an additional £1.4 billion to the UK economy.

Skills Shortage

However, the sector faces a critical challenge: the growing demand for skilled professionals. There is a shortage of qualified engineers, technicians, and project specialists to meet the pace of development. This presents an opportunity to invest in training and upskilling, enabling the sector to create a self-sustaining cycle of growth. As the industry develops worldwide, it's important to make sure local communities benefit by building a skilled workforce.
