Design Manager

The Design Manager will lead a specialist technical design team delivering engineering projects, acting as the technical authority within their discipline. The role involves managing client interfaces, commercial and contractual matters, and ensuring the timely delivery of high-quality design outputs. The Design Manager will oversee budgets, manage risks, and develop team capability to meet business objectives.


Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary client interface and support project and business development opportunities.

  • Lead and manage the design team to deliver quality outputs on time and to agreed standards.

  • Ensure effective design assurance, reviews, and final technical approvals.

  • Oversee design risk, health and safety compliance, and CDM Regulations 2015 requirements.

  • Ensure designs are fit for construction and operation, including risk and hazard assessments.

  • Manage contracts, budgets, resources, and project performance against financial targets.

  • Support bids, tenders, and team growth initiatives.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of systems, processes, and quality standards.


Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.

  • Chartered Engineer (ICE, IStructE, or equivalent).

  • 10+ years' UK-based experience in consultancy or contracting.

  • Strong knowledge of the UK Energy sector and DNO experience.

  • Proven multi-disciplinary project and commercial management experience.

  • Knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015 and UK health and safety requirements.

  • Proficiency in Autodesk software and MS365.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

  • Full UK driving licence.

Job Summary:The preferred candidate is responsible for design preparation based on customer specifications, conducting engineering activities from the design stage through site commissioning, and acting as a technical interface between the customer and the internal grid automation technical community.
