As the world moves toward NetZero goals, ERSG looks to the latest insights from the GWEC Global Wind Report 2025 to better understand current trends and the future of renewable energy. In this blog, we explore key findings from the report alongside our 2025 market predictions to offer a forward-looking view of the wind energy sector, where it stands today and what’s next.
Wind Energy
At the start of the year, we identified the need for continued investment in onshore and offshore wind, which have long driven renewable energy growth. In 2024, global wind capacity additions reached around 125 GW, and this momentum is expected to continue into 2025.
The GWEC Global Wind Report 2025 reviews the industry’s 2024 performance and outlines the path to accelerated growth. It stresses the importance of sustained investment and innovation. With advancing technology, supportive policy, and increasing public backing, wind energy is well-positioned to become a cornerstone of the global energy transition. The report also highlights emerging markets with strong potential, including Africa, Asia-Pacific, Central Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and the Americas.
Industry Growth
Technological progress and policy backing continue to boost wind projects worldwide. In 2024, the global wind industry installed a record 117 GW of new capacity, edging past the 116.6 GW added in 2023. Total global capacity now stands at 1,136 GW. Of this, 109 GW came from onshore wind and 8 GW from offshore projects.
Potential Hurdles
In our 2025 outlook, ERSG noted possible risks stemming from global political shifts, particularly after the 2024 US election. The GWEC report echoes these concerns, citing policy instability, permitting delays, grid infrastructure gaps, and trade tensions, especially around U.S. tariffs, as key challenges.
Another critical hurdle is the growing skills shortage. The GWEC report states the industry will need 532,000 new wind technicians by 2028, with 40% of these roles filled by newcomers. Without skilled workers, the pace of progress could slow considerably.
Despite record growth, current expansion still falls short of the 320 GW annual increase needed to meet the UN’s goal of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030.
Looking Ahead
The GWEC report supports what ERSG outlined in our 2025 predictions: onshore and offshore wind are on course for exponential growth. Moving forward, collaboration between industry, policymakers, and communities will be essential to see continued expansion.
To speed up wind energy deployment, the GWEC report calls for reducing investment risk, creating shared standards, strengthening trade cooperation, and building political and public support. By addressing these challenges and capitalising on new opportunities, we can shape a greener future.
