Role Overview

The Site-Based Geotechnical Engineer will provide on-site technical oversight and support for earthworks operations, ensuring that construction activities comply with design specifications, geotechnical recommendations, and relevant standards. The role requires close coordination with construction teams, subcontractors, and designers to manage ground-related risks and ensure quality, safety, and programme delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Technical & Site Oversight

  • Provide geotechnical supervision of earthworks activities including excavation, fill placement, compaction, and ground improvement.
  • Interpret geotechnical reports, drawings, and specifications for site implementation.
  • Monitor ground conditions and identify deviations from expected conditions.
  • Advise site teams on excavation stability, slope design, temporary works, and dewatering requirements.
  • Review and verify compliance with earthworks specifications (e.g., material suitability, moisture conditioning, compaction standards).

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Oversee field testing including compaction testing, plate load tests, CBR testing, and material classification.
  • Coordinate laboratory testing and review results.
  • Maintain accurate site records, inspection reports, and non-conformance documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with project specifications, local standards, and regulatory requirements.

Risk & Problem Management

  • Identify and assess geotechnical risks associated with earthworks operations.
  • Propose and implement mitigation measures where ground conditions differ from design assumptions.
  • Support resolution of unexpected ground conditions, instability, settlement, or groundwater issues.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare site inspection reports and technical memos.
  • Contribute to as-built documentation.
  • Assist with geotechnical input into progress reports and claims assessment where required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering.
  • 3-8 years of relevant experience in geotechnical engineering, with strong earthworks exposure.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a site-based construction environment.

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of soil mechanics and earthworks construction practices.
  • Familiarity with earthworks specifications and compaction standards.
  • Experience interpreting ground investigation data.
  • Working knowledge of slope stability, settlement analysis, and temporary works.
  • Ability to assess material suitability for engineered fill.
