Senior Electrical Engineer - Distribution

About the Opportunity

An established engineering consultancy is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join its growing Distribution team. This position offers the opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of electrical infrastructure projects across the utilities, industrial, renewable energy, and commercial sectors.

The successful candidate will be involved in the design and delivery of medium and low voltage electrical networks, supporting projects from initial concept through to detailed design and implementation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design medium and low voltage electrical distribution systems in accordance with UK utility standards.
  • Develop network solutions including radial, ring main and open/closed ring configurations.
  • Produce layouts for distribution substations, electrical plant and associated equipment.
  • Prepare primary electrical designs for MV and LV infrastructure.
  • Develop protection and control schemes, including wiring diagrams and equipment interfaces.
  • Complete cable sizing calculations and produce routing, termination and installation drawings.
  • Carry out earthing system design and modelling, including touch, step and transfer potential assessments.
  • Design auxiliary electrical systems, standby power arrangements, SCADA interfaces and metering solutions.
  • Produce technical specifications and assist with equipment selection and procurement activities.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, contractors and project stakeholders.
  • Support electrical network studies, validation activities and system performance assessments.
  • Consider arc flash hazards and incorporate suitable mitigation measures into designs.
  • Review technical documentation to ensure compliance with project requirements and engineering standards.
  • Participate in internal design reviews and contribute to continuous improvement within the engineering team.

Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience delivering MV and LV electrical design projects within the power or utilities sector.
  • Knowledge of UK electrical engineering standards and utility network design practices.
  • Understanding of power system fundamentals and electrical distribution principles.
  • Strong technical report writing and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with internal teams, clients and external suppliers.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience working within structured engineering design assurance processes.
  • Knowledge of CDM regulations, design risk management and pre-construction documentation.
  • MV and HV cable system design.
  • Protection and Control engineering.
  • Protection coordination, grading studies and fault level assessments.
  • Experience supporting electrical infrastructure, transmission or distribution projects.
